Small Businesses Underrepresented in Job Search Market (Why WorkOnward)

During the last few years, millions of workers either quit or were let go. Both corporations and small businesses alike were hit hard, but since July this year, those jobs have officially been recovered — in numbers, at least. In reality, any small business owner would know there is a massive imbalance of where those workers are actually going.

According to the US Department of Labor, there are over 32 million small businesses operating in the US, making up 99.9% of all businesses. Yet in August they had the smallest gains of new employees and have significantly slowed hiring. Not to any fault of their own, as small businesses are desperate to hire, but due to a lack of applicants and money.

About half (49%) of small businesses who froze hiring say one of the reasons is financial constraints. Hiring isn’t cheap and costs an average of $4,000 according to Glassdoor. Most hiring websites also ask for hundreds of dollars monthly just to view resumes and promote job listings, which often results in corporations saturating the job search market with their listings and leaving small businesses in the dust. It’s a system that favors those with deep pockets and forgets the ones at the heart of our communities.

A website built for small businesses is long overdue. That’s what the founder of WorkOnward realized as well, and why we’re building a company from the ground up with small business owners at its core.

Knowing small businesses are often functioning on a shallow profit margin, all the basic hiring features are 100% free and additional feature prices are on a pay-as-you-go basis. Everything from unlocking jobseekers’ resumes to creating and sending counter offers is only $2 per action, an extreme reduction from the three digits most websites ask for. Owners don’t have to break the bank to find a good candidate.

WorkOnward also puts small businesses on the map, by quite literally putting them on a map. Zillow meets Ziprecruiter with this unique map feature, which allows candidates to see businesses in relation to their neighborhood so they can take commute and other factors in mind. It also goes the other way and allows businesses to hire directly from their communities.

Small businesses don’t have to worry about out-competing corporations and can focus on finding their perfect fit on WorkOnward.
